These stories, set in Lahinch, County Clare, Ireland, are about golf and golfers – and those who have to live with them!
Whereas my other book, “A Golfing Dog’s Life”, viewed the golfing lifestyle in Lahinch through the eyes of a very special dog called Gorgeous Gussie, this book looks at it through the eyes of the (fictional) all-knowing, all-seeing Secretary/Manager of the (real) Lahinch Golf Club. Even though he wasn’t personally present for the very first story in the book, ‘The Boys From BallyB ,’ that came to him in a vision and this is how we know that golf was first played in Ireland (Sorry, Scotland).
This book also contains my Prize-winning story ‘Hoist…’ which explores the eternal conflict between golf and gardening and proves that a golfer never gets an even break! There are twenty stories in total (47k words), looking at all the ways that golf can grab the unsuspecting and make their lives a misery. Jammy Flaherty, the baddest man in town, features in several stories, including my personal favourite of the 80 or so golfing stories that I have written to-date, namely, ‘The Merchant of Ennis’. The idea for that story came from that well-known wordsmith, W.P. Shakespeare, although it is written in a slightly more modern style!
