I wasn't sure I loved this book until I heard an interview last night with Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the TV series Lost. He said, "I like stories where the writer doesn't do all the math for me."The reason to love 8th Mountain sort of gelled. Back story is only sketchily revealed through the narrative & you and your own imagination are left, also, to fill in the future from your own viewpoint. No omniscient narrator reveals a puppet master in the wings. No other voice tells you how to feel about the strengths and weaknesses of the characters. This is a little window into reconnection with human potential.
For anyone with some experience with wilderness, it captures some of the inescapable feeling of being there without company, but clearly not alone. You'd like to stay.

This was a fast read, though much was left hanging. I prefer books, even serials, to have a solid ending, not just stop, waiting for the next book. Though it lacked a strong individual character development, the book flowed well.
